Who is this Helpful Hobart and what’s this all about?  

My name is Mark Martinez and my name is Helpful Hobart.

A colleague of mind would always ask me, “Mark, what do you want to be when you grow up?”  My answer was always the same, “I have no idea!”  I felt stuck.  In a rut.  Working for the same company, year after year had it’s perks.  Loads of vacation time, flexibility, a position of influence.  I began to become a bit dissatisfied with my job, realizing I was putting money in a bank’s pocket that seemed to care less about their employees and more about the bottom line.

The Turning Point

People often ask the question, “If you had all the money in the world, what would you do?”  That question is somehow supposed to help you decide what to do for a career – do what you love and love what you do.  My answer to that question would be “nothing.  I would do absolutely nothing and enjoy doing it.”  I realized a better question would be, “If you used your unique skill-set and experience to help someone, what would you do?”  Boom!  I realized my vision for what i could do to make money and provide for my family was too limited.  I decided the best way to help others would be to write.

I can write steps to improving one’s situation.  Practical things that i have learned through life and through business.  This includes finances, life planning, writing vision and purpose statements, setting goals, and taking steps to achieve those goals. So if Mark is writing, where does Helpful Hobart come in?
